What are 904L's best qualities?
- This grade of stainless steel is notable for its low carbon content and high copper levels, enhancing its resistance to strong acids such as sulfuric acid. The substantial nickel concentration provides exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, 904L stainless steel exhibits remarkable resistance to crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, which are common issues for other steel types. This versatile alloy performs excellently in various challenging environments, including warm waters and chloride exposure, making it suitable for both moderate and highly aggressive conditions.
- 904L stainless steel demonstrates exceptional heat resistance, enduring temperatures up to 400 degrees Celsius. It can be heat treated in the range of 1090 to 1175 degrees Celsius, followed by rapid cooling, which is an optimal method for hardening 904L steel.
- Due to its unique composition, this stainless steel is nonmagnetic. It offers superior weldability, formability, and toughness across a wide range of conditions, making it an excellent choice for diverse applications.
- 904L steel is compatible with any standard welding methods, and it does not require pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments, simplifying the welding process.
What is 904L used for?
As already highlighted, 904L stainless steel is extensively used in watchmaking due to its high purity and low sulfur content. In industrial spheres, its applications are vast and include:

Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L can be effortlessly welded and processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.
Cold Forming
- 904L is highly ductile and easily forms. However, the addition of molybdenum and nitrogen may necessitate more robust processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- For hot working, 904L requires temperatures between 1562°F to 2102°F (850°C - 1150°C). Typically, hot working should be followed by a solution anneal and quench. However, if hot forming stops above 2012°F (1100°C) and the material is immediately quenched, it can be used without further heat treatment. Ensuring the entire workpiece is quenched from temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C) is essential. If partial heating or cooling drops below 2012°F (1100°C), or if cooling is too slow, a solution anneal and quench must follow. 904L should be solution annealed at 1940°F - 2084°F (1060°C - 1140°C).
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L makes it less machinable compared to 410 and 304 stainless steels.
Welding
- Most conventional welding methods are effective with Alloy 904L. Austenitic plate materials have a uniform austenitic structure and an even distribution of alloying elements. Elements like molybdenum, chromium, and nickel redistribute during welding solidification. These segregations persist in the weld's cast structure and may reduce corrosion resistance in particular cases. Segregation is minimal in 904L, which is typically welded with filler metal matching the base metal composition but can also be welded without filler metal.
