CORROSION RESISTANCE:

316L Stainless Steel Rod

  • Boasting superior resistance compared to 304, 316L excels in a variety of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media, thanks to its enhanced chromium
    and molybdenum content.
  • However, it may be prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride settings, alongside stress corrosion cracking above 122°F (50°C).
  • This grade is considered resistant to potable water with chloride levels up to approximately 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, decreasing to 500mg/L at
    140°F (60°C).
  • Often heralded as the "marine grade stainless steel," it should be noted that 316L is not impervious to warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

  • Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance during intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
  • Grade 316L stands out with an improved resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • 316L boasts exceptional weldability using all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
  • While grade 316 requires post-weld annealing for peak corrosion resistance in heavy welded sections, this is not necessary for 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

  • The annealing temperature range for 316L is between 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
  • Note that 316L cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
  • Special care must be taken to account for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • Most manufacturers recommend a peak forging temperature range of 2100°F to 2300°F.
  • Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) to ensure optimal
  • corrosion resistance, ideally achieved through a final anneal of the forgings.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • 316/316L stainless steel rods, known for their tough and ductile nature, are easily cold worked through methods like roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
    bending, etc., with minimal difficulty.
  • Severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing to alleviate stress.

MACHINEABILITY:

  • The toughness of Type 316/316L stainless steel rods makes them slightly more challenging to machine compared to Type 304.
  • These grades exhibit robust and tough chip characteristics.
  • Utilization of chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
  • For optimal results, employ the largest possible tool and copious amounts of cutting fluid.
  • Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds as 316/316L work hardens quickly.
