Known in the industry for its enhanced formability, it is often referred to as "High Performance" or "Ultra Form."

Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel. This versatile, general-purpose chromium stainless steel is predominantly utilized in automotive exhaust systems. Grade 409 is ideal for applications that emphasize mechanical qualities, corrosion resistance, and weldability over cosmetic appearance, especially in high-temperature conditions.
- ASTM requirements, including ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, now recognize S40910, S40920, and S40930 as "sub-grades" instead of the generic grade 409.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to varying degrees with titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Any of these could be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). ASTM A268M specifically lists standard Grade 409 for covering tubes.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 boasts resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. While a light surface rust forms in most environments, which halts further corrosion, it is not suitable for aesthetic purposes. The corrosion resistance of Grade 409 is comparable to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410), but lower when compared to the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat resistance
- Grade 409 resists scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and in continuous service up to 675°C. However, these temperatures can vary depending on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- To anneal, heat to a temperature range of 790-900°C and then cool with air. This grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easy to weld, but a pre-heat of 150-260°C is recommended. While Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods can be used, welding with Grade 309 rods or electrodes is pre-qualified per AS 1554.6. These austenitic fillers result in a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility.
Post-weld annealing is not required for welding small sections. Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded without filler metal (autogenously).
To mitigate grain formation impacts, all welding should be performed with minimal heat.

- ASTM A268M specifies the parameters for annealed Grade 409 tubing. ASTM A240M outlines the composition of additional grades for coil and sheet applications. Other specifications for different items may include similar but not identical properties.
FORMING:
- Grade 409 stainless steel can be easily cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability is very similar to that of carbon steel.
