GENERAL PROPERTIES

  • 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized, austenitic stainless steel renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance. With high resistance to intergranular corrosion even after exposure to the chromium carbide precipitation range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C), this alloy can withstand oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and boasts superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L steel. It also offers impressive low-temperature toughness.
  • Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S 32109) is a higher carbon content variant of 321, boasting a carbon range of 0.04 - 0.10. Designed for enhanced creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C), its carbon content often permits dual certification.
  • Alloy 321 enhances its toughness through cold working, not heat treatment. It is easily weldable and processable using common shop fabrication techniques.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

  • Exhibits excellent general corrosion resistance, comparable to 304.
  • Developed for use within the chromium carbide precipitation range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
  • Suitable for most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
  • Effective in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
  • Efficient in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
  • Resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.
  • Utilized in chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
  • Not recommended for use in chloride solutions, even at low concentrations, or in sulfuric acid service.

PROCESSING

Alloy 321/H is easily weldable and processable by standard shop fabrication methods.

HOT FORMING

  • Recommended working temperatures are 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C) for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes.
  • Alloy is unsuitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
  • Material must be water quenched or fully annealed post-working to restore maximum corrosion resistance.

COLD FORMING

  • Highly ductile and readily forms.

WELDING

  • Easily welded using most standard processes.
  • Post-weld heat treatment is unnecessary.

MACHINING

  • 321's hardening rate reduces machinability compared to 410 stainless steel but is similar to 304.
