904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a premium high-alloy austenitic product designed to withstand severe corrosion, boasting exceptional resistance.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a low carbon content. This high-alloy stainless steel is enhanced with copper, boosting its resistance to strong reducing acids such as sulfuric acid. It is also highly resistant to stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic, 904L stainless steel offers outstanding formability, toughness, and welding capabilities, with a high concentration of costly elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel exhibits excellent resistance to hot seawater and chloride attack. The high nickel content significantly enhances stress corrosion cracking resistance. The addition of copper further improves resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both corrosive and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L grade steel is intermediate between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. For optimal resistance to stress corrosion cracking in sensitive settings, this grade should undergo solution treatment following cold working.

Grade 904L stainless steels tubes exhibit outstanding resistance to warm seawater and chloride attacks. This exceptional durability against stress corrosion cracking is attributed to the significant nickel content in its composition. Furthermore, the inclusion of copper enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents under both aggressive and mild conditions.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L is intermediate between that of super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic grades. Although less resistant than 304L and 310L grades, which are molybdenum-free, it excels in demanding environments. For optimum stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments, a solution treatment following cold working is essential.
Grade 904L stainless steels offer commendable oxidation resistance. Despite this, its structural stability diminishes at elevated temperatures, particularly above 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels can be effectively solution heat-treated between 1090 and 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is ideal for hardening these grades.
Grade 904L stainless steels can be welded using all standard methods, without needing pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments. However, hot cracking can occur in constrained weldments. For optimal results, use grade 904L electrodes and rods compliant with AS 1554.6.
Grade 904L stainless steels tubes are characterized by high purity and low sulfur content, making them suitable for machining with standard methods. They can be easily bent to small radii under cold conditions. While subsequent annealing is generally unnecessary, it is recommended when the fabrication is performed under severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
Some of the key applications of grade 904L stainless steel tubes include:
