GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a premium two-phase, ferritic, and austenitic stainless steel enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Celebrated as the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel, this grade boasts a yield strength twice that of standard austenitic grades. It excels with remarkable fatigue strength and extraordinary resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and overall corrosion in demanding environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- This composition also ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic conditions.
- Resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and effective in temperatures up to about 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite content ensures commendable performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 shows excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even with short exposure. Hence, it is not recommended for use above this threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Known for its commendable weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal is not advisable as it may lead to excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Ideal annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened through heat treatment, but it does work-harden.
- Special care is needed to account for a higher thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Leading producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, cooler edges may ***, requiring careful temperature management.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205, a pinnacle of innovation, boasts exceptional formability across varying fabrications. Yet, its superior strength can present challenges. Even with powerful equipment, it's crucial to account for the increased spring-back attributed to this grade's high tensile strength.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 demands more precision than 300 series austenitic stainless steels due to its higher cutting forces, which hasten tool wear. Consider these machining guidelines: A) Employ robust, rigid machinery with steadfast mounting for tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration with the shortest possible tool extensions, C) Utilize a nose radius on tools that balances sharpness with strength, and D) Design machining sequences to ensure cuts always penetrate beneath the work-hardened layers from previous passes.

What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils varies based on cold rolling methods and post-rolling treatments. Available finishes include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and others:
- NO.1: This finish results from hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling, removing the black oxide scale formed during these processes. It holds the premier position in surface treatment, offering a silvery white, matte appearance. Ideal for industries that prioritize heat resistance and corrosion resistance over surface gloss, such as the alcohol, chemical, and large container industries.
- 2B: Distinct from the 2D finish, the 2B surface undergoes light rolling for enhanced brightness. With a surface roughness Ra value between 0.1 to 0.5μm, it stands as a versatile choice suitable for the chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical industries, and building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301, catering to high strength and hardness requirements for railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. By exploiting the work-hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel, cold working methods such as rolling enhance the steel's strength and hardness. Unlike the smooth 2B finish, TR hard material undergoes minimal rolling post cold-working, without annealing, resulting in a rugged surface.
- Re-Rolled Bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip will be bright annealed. A state-of-the-art continuous annealing line rapidly cools the strip as it travels at an impressive speed of 60-80m/min. Post-process, the surface achieves a stunning 2H re-rolled bright finish.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface stands out with its superior polishing effect, shining brighter than No. 3. This finish is achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by treating it with a sanding belt of 150-180# grit. Surface roughness (Ra) measures between a refined 0.2 to 1.5μm. The No. 4 finish is highly sought after for restaurant and cooking equipment, medical apparatus, architectural decorations, containers, and much more.
- HL: The HL surface, known as a hairline finish, is crafted to perfection. As per the Japanese JIS standard, it is achieved using a 150-240# abrasive belt for a continuous hairline texture. The Chinese GB3280 standard's restrictions are less clear. This elegant surface is ideal for architectural embellishments like elevators, escalators, and building exteriors.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface builds on the No. 4 finish, further refined with a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive material as specified in the GB2477 standard. This finish boasts a metallic shimmer, softness, subtle reflectivity, and no imaging. Its excellent attributes make it perfect for curtain walls, intricate decorations, and cooking utensils.
- BA: The BA surface is achieved through bright heat treatment post cold rolling. Annealing in a protective atmosphere ensures a non-oxidized, glossy surface, which is then polished with a high-precision roller to enhance brightness. With a surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, it closely resembles a mirror finish. BA surfaces are versatile, used in food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorative pieces.
- No. 8: The No. 8 mirror surface offers maximum reflectivity with no abrasive particles. Known in the industry as 8K board, this finish requires minimal polishing when using BA material. The result is a stunning, mirror-like surface, perfect for building entrances and interior design.
