CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Generally more resistant than 304 in a wide range of atmospheric environments and numerous corrosive media due to its elevated chromium
    and molybdenum content, ensuring superior protection.
  • Though highly durable, it can be prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, and stress corrosion cracking above 122°F (50°C).
  • Deemed resistant to potable water containing chlorides up to 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, reducing to about 500mg/L at
    140°F (60°C), showcasing remarkable versatility.
  • Commonly recognized as the "marine grade stainless steel", it is however not resistant to warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

  • Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
  • Grade 316L specifically offers enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Boasts exceptional weldability by all standard fusion techniques, with or without the use of filler metals.
  • For Grade 316, heavy welded sections necessitate post-weld annealing to maximize corrosion resistance; however, this is not required for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

  • The annealing temperature range is between 1900°F and 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C).
  • Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
  • Special considerations should be made to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • Most producers suggest maintaining a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
  • Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) for best results.
  • Optimum corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Types 316/316L, known for their extreme toughness and ductility, can be effortlessly cold worked through roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
    bending, etc., without significant challenges.
  • Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

  • Type 316/316L is moderately more challenging to machine compared to Type 304 due to its toughness.
  • These types exhibit chip characteristics that are robust and durable.
  • Using chip breakers and curlers is highly recommended.
  • Utilize the largest tools possible along with abundant cutting fluid.
  • Heavy positive feeds at low speeds are advisable as 316/316L work hardens quickly.
