431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts outstanding corrosion resistance across a diverse array of corrosive environments. While it shows moderate resistance to saltwater in cool southern waters, its performance may be compromised in warm tropical waters. Generally, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material is comparable to, or slightly inferior to, that of 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved when the surface is smooth and the material is in a hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling at intermittent service temperatures up to 925°C and continuous service temperatures up to 870°C. However, it is typically not recommended for applications exceeding the relevant tempering temperature due to a reduction in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is impractical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. For process annealing, heat to 620-660°C and allow to air cool.
Achieve hardening by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for approximately 30 minutes, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C can be beneficial for complex parts or those already hardened. Temper according to mechanical requirements at specified temperatures.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C due to reduced impact toughness, though the effect is less pronounced than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding this material is challenging due to cracking risks. Pre-heating to 200-300°C is advised prior to welding. While Grade 410 filler rods can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 may provide more ductile welds if matching properties are not required. Perform post-weld heat treatment at 650°C.
In its annealed condition, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, once hardened above 30HRC, machining becomes more challenging. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 offers significant enhancements in machining speeds and tool life.
Ideal for nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products in ASTM A276. Similar attributes are specified for other products such as plate and forgings, although they may not be identical.
