SPECIFICATIONS

AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)

AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)

AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)

HEAT TREATMENT

  • For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be performed at temperatures of 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), for ½ to 2 hours, then air or furnace cool
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), for 1 to 8 hours, then air or furnace cool
  • 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), for 1 hour, followed by water quenching
  • 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), for 4 to 8 hours, then air cool

In the solution-treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of small sections yields optimal properties. Larger sections and/or delayed quenching may result in less-than-optimal properties.

HARDNESS

Typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition to about Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution-treated and aged condition.

Forgeability/Formability

  • Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is forged at 1,750°F; (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F; (788°C). A minimum of 35% reduction is recommended to achieve optimal properties.
  • The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. To overcome this, severe forming operations such as bending or stretching should be performed on annealed material at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical properties. Achieve hot sizing or forming effortlessly through creep forming within the range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).

Machinability

The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is machinable using austenitic stainless steel methods. Employ slow machining speeds, high feeds, rigid tools, and abundant non-chlorinated cutting fluids to achieve optimal results.

Weldability

Easily weld the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod in the annealed state or in solution and partially aged conditions, with aging occurring during post-weld heat treatment. Prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen by performing fusion welding in an inert gas-filled chamber or using inert gas for welding molten metal and adjacent heated zones with a tail shield. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be executed without a protective atmosphere.

Special Considerations

Be cautious of contamination in Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rods. Improper pickling can lead to hydrogen contamination, while forging, heat treating, and brazing can introduce oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon. Such contamination can reduce ductility, adversely affecting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Corrosion Resistance: Unmatched durability against corrosive environments.

Titanium should not be used with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.

General Corrosion: Comprehensive corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium across various media detailed in Table 1.

The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in a variety of media are shown in Table 1. CP titanium exhibits good corrosion resistance to a wide variety of environments including:

  • Seawater and Brines: Exceptional protection in marine environments.
  • Inorganic Salts: Superior resistance to a wide range of inorganic salt solutions.
  • Moist *** Gas: Reliable performance in the presence of moist *** gas.
  • Alkaline Solutions: Robust durability in alkaline conditions.
  • Oxidizing Acids: Excellent resistance to oxidizing acids.
  • Organics and Organic Acids: Strong resilience against organic compounds and acids.
  • Sulfur Compounds: Effective in environments containing sulfur compounds.

Crevice Corrosion: Superior resistance to crevice corrosion compared to stainless steels, especially in salt solutions.

CP titanium exhibits good resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. CP titanium will not exhibit crevice corrosion at temperatures under 80 °C ( 176°F) regardless of pH, even under super chlorinated conditions.

Stress Corrosion Cracking: Exceptional resistance to SCC in hot chloride solutions and immunity in seawater.

Grade 2 titanium shows excellent resistance to stress corrosion (SCC) cracking in hot chloride solutions and is immune to sec in seawater.

Erosion Corrosion: Outstanding resistance to erosion in dynamic, flowing environments.

Titanium shows excellent resistance to erosion in flowing environments, making it ideal for demanding applications.
Seawater with velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) demonstrates negligible impact on the material. Even the presence of abrasive particles, such as sand, has only a minimal effect on corrosion.

Hydrogen Embrittlement

There is no significant absorption of hydrogen into titanium exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically occurs only when the following three conditions are met:

  1. pH is < 3 or > 12
  2. Temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C)
  3. A mechanism exists for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or an impressed current.

Bio-Corrosion

Titanium alloys exhibit exceptional resistance to all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. Since titanium alloys do not display any toxicity toward marine organisms, biofouling can occur in seawater, which can be mitigated by chlorination or increasing the water velocity through the heat exchanger.

Corrosion Fatigue

Titanium, unlike many other materials, retains its fatigue performance in seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain consistent whether tested in air or seawater.

Galvanic Corrosion

In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned toward the noble end near stainless steels and typically acts as the cathode when paired with other metals. Thus, titanium remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion but may accelerate corrosion in the other metal. Coupling titanium with more noble metals, such as graphite, further enhances its passivity.

Fatigue Properties

Grade 2 Titanium Rod shows no degradation in fatigue properties in the presence of seawater. Both fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates are the same whether tested in air or seawater.

Weldability

CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable when appropriate precautions are taken. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield must be used on both the OD and ID of the rod. Additionally, the material must be free of grease or oil contamination.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod is usually welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input should be employed to minimize the size of the heat-affected zone. Typically, post-weld heat treatment is not required for Titanium Rod.
