SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT
- For applications requiring enhanced hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be performed at temperatures ranging from 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options. - 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F (538 - 649°C) for 1 to 8 hours, with air or furnace cooling.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C) for 1 hour, followed by water quenching.
- 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, with air cooling.
In the solution-treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of smaller sections yields optimal properties. Larger sections or delayed quenching may result in properties below their optimal potential.
HARDNESS
The typical hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, while in the solution-treated and aged condition, it ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.
Forgeability/Formability
- Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For optimal properties, a minimum of 35% reduction is recommended during forging.
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is notably challenging to form at ambient temperatures, even after annealing. However, demanding forming operations such as bending or stretching can be executed on the annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming is feasible through creep forming within the temperature range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be efficiently machined using techniques suited for austenitic stainless steel. This requires slow machining speeds, high feed rates, rigid tooling, and the copious application of non-chlorinated cutting fluids.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable when in the annealed state or in the solution and partially aged condition. Post-weld heat treatment can achieve aging. Care must be taken to avoid contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should be conducted in an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas shield to protect the molten metal and heated areas. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be done without the need for a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to contamination by hydrogen from improper pickling, and by oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, brazing, etc. Such contamination can reduce ductility and negatively impact notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Corrosion Resistance
Titanium should be avoided with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion
The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in various media are outlined in Table 1. Commercially Pure (CP) titanium exhibits formidable corrosion resistance in a multitude of environments including:
- Seawater and Brines
- Inorganic Salts
- Moist *** Gas
- Alkaline Solutions
- Oxidizing Acids
- Organics and Organic Acids
- Sulfur Compounds
Crevice Corrosion
CP titanium demonstrates superior resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. It remains unaffected by crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80°C (176°F), even under super-chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking
Grade 2 titanium offers exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and remains immune to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium exhibits outstanding resistance to erosion in dynamic environments.
Withstanding the rigors of seawater flows reaching velocities of up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), our material demonstrates remarkable resilience, showing negligible impact. Even when abrasive particles like sand are present, the corrosion resistance remains consistently high.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium's interaction with seawater proves unrivaled, showing no significant absorption of hydrogen, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption in titanium occurs only under very specific conditions:
- When pH levels are < 3 or > 12
- Temperatures exceed 176F (80C)
- A mechanism promotes hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or an impressed current.
Bio-corrosion
Titanium alloys exhibit a unique immunity to all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. While they do not display toxicity toward marine life, leading to potential biofouling in seawater, this can be effectively managed through chlorination or by increasing water velocity in heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many materials, titanium does not exhibit diminished fatigue performance in seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates are consistent whether in air or seawater, ensuring long-term reliability.
Galvanic Corrosion
Positioned towards the noble end of the galvanic series, near stainless steels, titanium typically acts as the cathode when paired with other metals. This means titanium remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion but can accelerate corrosion in the other metal. Coupling with more noble metals like graphite further enhances titanium's passivity.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod maintains its fatigue properties even in the presence of seawater. The endurance limits and *** growth rates do not degrade, providing consistent performance in varying environments.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable with appropriate precautions. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield is essential on both the OD and ID of the rod. Ensuring the material is free of grease or oil contamination is also critical.
Typically, Grade 2 Titanium Rod is welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. To limit the heat affected zone, low heat input is advised. Post-weld heat treatment is usually unnecessary for Titanium Rod.
