CORROSION RESISTANCE

  • With its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in nearly all environments.
  • The alloy's composition ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in aggressive, oxidizing, and acidic solutions.
  • Effectively resists chloride stress corrosion cracking and can withstand temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).

HEAT RESISTANCE

  • Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 exhibits commendable oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
  • However, it is prone to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short durations, making it unsuitable for use beyond this temperature threshold.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS

  • Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent weldability.
  • Generally, avoid welding without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation.

HEAT TREATMENT

  • The recommended annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
  • It cannot be hardened through heat treatment, though Duplex 2205 does work-harden.
  • Special care is required to account for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to minimize warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING

  • Most producers of Duplex 2205 advise a maximum hot forming temperature of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, the edges may cool significantly compared to the bulk, risking cracking in the cooler zones.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING

  • Duplex 2205 exhibits remarkable formability across a myriad of fabrication processes. However, its high strength can present certain challenges. Even with adequate equipment power, one must account for the increased spring-back resulting from this grade's superior strength.

MACHINABILITY

Duplex 2205 is slightly more challenging to machine compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It demands higher cutting forces, leading to accelerated tool wear. Here are some machining guidelines: A) Utilize powerful, sturdy machines with exceptionally strong and rigid mounting of tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration by keeping the tool extension as short as possible, C) Employ a nose radius on the tool, only as long as necessary, for carbides with a sharp edge that still provide adequate strength, and D) Design machining sequences to ensure a cutting depth below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.

What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?

The surface finish of a 201 stainless steel coil varies based on the cold rolling processing methods and subsequent surface treatments. These treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR Hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and other finishes:

  • NO.1: This finish is obtained after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of the stainless steel strip. The process removes the black oxide scale formed during hot rolling and heat treatment, resulting in a silvery white, matte surface. It is primarily used in industries that require heat and corrosion resistance without high surface gloss, such as the alcohol industry, chemical industry, and large containers.
  • 2B: The 2B surface, smoothed by a light roller, is brighter than the 2D surface. It features a surface roughness Ra value ranging from 0.1 to 0.5μm, making it adaptable for various applications. This finish is suitable for industries like chemicals, papermaking, petroleum, medical sectors, and building curtain walls.
  • TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301. This finish is used for high-strength, high-hardness applications such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel are harnessed to enhance the strength and hardness of the steel plates through cold rolling. The TR hard surface results from gently rolling hard materials by a few percent to tens of percent without subsequent annealing, maintaining the cold rolling process finish.
  • Re-rolled Bright 2H: Following the meticulous rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled as it traverses the line at speeds of 60-80m/min. This procedure ensures a 2H re-rolled bright surface finish, exuding brilliance and resilience.
  • No. 4: The No. 4 surface, known for its superior polishing effect, shines brighter than No. 3. Achieved by polishing cold-rolled stainless steel with a 2D or 2B finish, followed by sanding with a 150-180# grit belt, the surface roughness (Ra) ranges between 0.2 and 1.5μm. This finish is ideal for various applications including restaurant and cooking equipment, medical devices, architectural decor, and containers.
  • HL: The HL surface, or hairline finish, is defined by the Japanese JIS standard as a continuous abrasive surface polished with a 150-240# grit belt. The Chinese GB3280 standard, however, lacks clarity on its restrictions. This elegant finish is frequently chosen for architectural decorations such as elevators, escalators, and exterior walls.
  • No. 6: The No. 6 surface surpasses No. 4 with additional polishing using a Tampico brush or a W63 grit abrasive as per GB2477 standard. It boasts a metallic luster, softness, subtle reflection, and no imaging, making it perfect for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and culinary supplies.
  • BA: The BA surface is characterized by bright heat treatment post-cold rolling, performed in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation. Polished with a high-precision roller, it achieves a surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, nearing mirror finish. This versatile surface is ideal for food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorative applications.
  • No. 8: Known for its mirror-like finish and maximum reflectivity, the No. 8 surface, or 8K board in deep processing industries, uses BA material for mirror processing. This polished surface is stunningly beautiful, often utilized in building entrances and interior decor.
