Advanced HEAT TREATMENT

  • For achieving superior hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be performed at temperatures between 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
    DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench
  • 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool

In the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of small sections yields optimal properties. Larger section sizes and/or delayed quenching may result in less than optimal properties.

HARDNESS Levels

Typical hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, and about Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution-treated and aged condition.

Superior Forgeability and Formability

  • Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Bar is expertly forged at an initial temperature of 1,750°F (954°C), concluding at 1,450°F (788°C). To achieve optimal properties, a minimum reduction of 35% is highly recommended.
  • Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Bar presents challenging forming conditions at room temperature, even when annealed. Severe operations like bending or stretching can still be performed at up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical integrity. Hot sizing can be efficiently executed through creep forming between 1,000°F and 1,200°F (538°C - 649°C).

Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Rod offers excellent weldability, whether annealed or in the solution and partially aged condition, with aging attainable during post-weld heat treatment. Preventative measures against contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen are essential. Fusion welding can be done in an inert gas chamber or with inert gas shields for the molten metal and adjacent zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding are possible without a protective atmosphere.

Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Titanium Alloy Rod can be susceptible to hydrogen contamination from improper pickling, and to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during various processes such as forging or brazing. General Corrosion

Stress Corrosion Cracking

Grade 2 titanium exhibits unparalleled resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and remains completely immune to SCC in seawater.

Erosion Corrosion

Titanium demonstrates outstanding resistance to erosion, even in rapidly flowing environments.
Seawater with velocities of up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) shows negligible impact on the material. The presence of abrasive particles like sand has minimal effect on corrosion.

Hydrogen Embrittlement

Titanium does not significantly absorb hydrogen when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically occurs only under the following three stringent conditions:

  1. pH is < 3 or > 12
  2. Temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C)
  3. A mechanism for hydrogen generation exists, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.

Bio-Corrosion

Weldability

CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable when proper precautions are observed. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield must protect both the outer and inner surfaces of the rod, and the material must be free of grease or oil contamination.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod is typically welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input should be used to minimize the heat-affected zone. Post-weld heat treatment is usually not required for Titanium Rod.
