904 Alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic product engineered to endure severe corrosion. It boasts exceptional corrosion resistance properties.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized, low-carbon austenitic stainless steel. This premium alloy includes copper, enhancing its resistance to strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid. It withstands stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic, it possesses remarkable formability, toughness, and welding capabilities. 904L grade features high molybdenum and nickel content.
904L grade stainless steel excels in resisting hot seawater and chloride attack. The high nickel content ensures outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Copper infusion bolsters resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both aggressive and mild environments. Its corrosion resistance stands between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. For optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in sensitive conditions, post-cold working solution treatment is essential.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes boast exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride assault. Their robust stress corrosion cracking resistance is attributed to the high nickel content in their composition. Additionally, the copper infusion in these grades enhances their resilience against sulfuric acid and various reducing agents in both severe and moderate environments.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L lies between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic grades. This grade is less resistant compared to grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum. To maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical conditions, grade 904L must be solution treated following cold working.
Grade 904L stainless steels exhibit commendable oxidation resistance. However, their structural integrity diminishes at high temperatures, particularly beyond 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels can undergo solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is crucial for hardening these grades.
The welding of grade 904L stainless steels can be executed using all standard techniques. Pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments are unnecessary. However, grade 904L may experience hot cracking in constrained weldments. For welding, grade 904L electrodes and rods compliant with AS 1554.6 are recommended.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are characterized by their high purity and low sulfur content. They can be machined using conventional methods and can be easily bent to small radii in cold conditions. While post-fabrication annealing is typically not required, it is advisable in situations involving severe stress corrosion cracking.
