General Properties
Alloy 420 Stainless Steel Plate is a hardenable martensitic stainless steel bar and is a derivative of Alloy 410. Similar to Alloy 410, it contains at least 12% chromium, sufficient to provide corrosion resistance. Stainless Steel Plate 420 contains more carbon than Alloy 410, intended to increase strength and hardness. It has good ductility after annealing, but can be hardened to a minimum Rockwell hardness of 50 HRC, the highest of the 12% chromium grades. Due to its hardening properties, Alloy 420 Stainless Steel Plate is rarely welded, but it is conceivable. Martensitic stainless steels were developed for high hardness, which may compromise other qualities. Corrosion resistance is lower than that of ordinary austenitic grades, and their useful operating range is limited by the loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures and the loss of strength caused by over-tempering at elevated temperatures. The best corrosion resistance is obtained when the metal is hardened and the surface is ground or polished.

Applications:
420 stainless steel is widely used in applications requiring excellent corrosion resistance and hardness. It is rarely used at temperatures above 800oF (427oC) due to rapid hardening and loss of corrosion resistance. Applications for 420 alloy include:

Corrosion resistance:
Less resistant than austenitic grades and 17% chromium ferritic alloys
Good resistance to atmosphere, foods, fresh water and mild acids in the hardened state

Heat resistance:
Not recommended for use above relevant tempering temperatures due to reduced mechanical properties
Scaling temperature is approximately 1202 o F (650 o C)
Machinability
Hard, elongated chip buildup.
Similar to machining some high carbon tool steels
Welding
Welding is not normally done due to air hardening characteristics
Preheat to 300-400 F before welding
Temper for 2 hours after welding
Hot Working
Slowly ramp up to 1400 F and then to 2000-2200 F is recommended
After furnace work, cool slowly to avoid cracking
Reheating is required to maintain working temperature above 1600 F.
Cold Working
Withstands only light cold working.
Aggressive forming will cause cracking.
Annealing
Anneal at 1550-1650 F (843-900 C)
Allow furnace to cool slowly.
Tempering
Temper at 300-400 F
Air cool for maximum hardness and corrosion resistance.
Hardening
Soak at 1850-1950 F, quench in hot oil.
