Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a premium stabilized ferritic stainless steel known for its superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. The ASTM A240 standard specifies three (3) subcategories of Type 409 stainless steel: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930, each with unique Ti or Nb stabilization requirements. In the absence of specific purchaser instructions, any of these compositions may be supplied as UNS S40900. This stainless steel is engineered with advanced formability properties, recognized in the industry as 'High Performance' or 'Ultra Form.'

Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel. This general-purpose chromium stainless steel is predominantly utilized in automotive exhaust systems. It is ideal for applications where mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and weldability are prioritized over aesthetics, especially at elevated temperatures.
- ASTM standards, particularly ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, now classify S40910, S40920, and S40930 as 'sub-grades' of the traditional Grade 409.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to various extents using titanium, niobium, or their combination, and any of these may be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). For tubing, ASTM A268M only recognizes the standard Grade 409.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 offers resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. A light surface rust may form in most environments, acting as a barrier to further corrosion but not suitable for cosmetic purposes. Its corrosion resistance is similar to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410), but inferior to the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C. However, these limits can vary depending on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat Grade 409 to 790-900 degrees Celsius and then air cool. This grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easily weldable, though pre-heating to 150-260°C is recommended. While electrodes or filler rods of Grade 409 or Grade 430 can be used, Grade 309 rods or electrodes are pre-qualified per AS 1554.6 for producing a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility.
Welding small sections does not necessitate post-weld annealing. Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded autogenously, without filler metal.
To minimize the effects of grain formation, welding should be performed with minimal heat input.
Typical Applications
Commonly used in automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.

- ASTM A268M outlines the parameters for annealed tubing of Grade 409, while ASTM A240M specifies the composition for coil and sheet applications of related grades. Specifications for other products may feature similar, yet not identical characteristics.
Forming:
- 409 stainless steel can be effortlessly cut, blanked, stretch formed, and drawn. Its formability closely resembles that of carbon steel.
