904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a premium high-alloy austenitic material designed to withstand extreme corrosion, offering exceptional resistance.
904L stainless steel is an advanced non-stabilized austenitic grade with low carbon content. This high-alloy steel includes copper, enhancing its resistance to strong reducing acids such as sulfuric acid. Additionally, it offers superior resistance to stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. 904L is non-magnetic, boasting outstanding formability, toughness, and welding capabilities. This grade's high concentration of valuable elements like molybdenum and nickel speaks to its exceptional quality.
904L grade stainless steel excels in resisting hot seawater and chloride attacks. Thanks to its high nickel content, 904L withstands stress corrosion cracking remarkably well. The addition of copper further improves resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both aggressive and mild environments. Its corrosion resistance sits between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. Unlike grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, 904L needs solution treatment after cold working to maximize stress corrosion resistance in sensitive conditions.

The 904L grade stainless steel tube is renowned for its exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride attacks. This remarkable resistance is attributed to the high nickel content within its composition. Additionally, the inclusion of copper enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, making it resilient in both aggressive and mild conditions.
904L grade's corrosion resistance stands intermediate between super austenitic grades, which contain 6% molybdenum, and standard 316L austenitic grades. Unlike grades 304L and 310L, which are molybdenum-free, 904L falls slightly short in resistance. To achieve optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments, post-cold work solution treatment is essential.
904L stainless steel exhibits commendable oxidation resistance. However, its structural stability diminishes at temperatures exceeding 400°C.
904L stainless steel can undergo solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is effective for hardening the grades.
Welding 904L stainless steel is feasible with all conventional methods and does not necessitate pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments. Despite this, 904L may experience hot cracking in constrained weldments. For welding, use 904L electrodes and rods as specified by AS 1554.6.
904L stainless steel tubes are noteworthy for their high purity and low sulfur content. They are compatible with standard machining methods and can be easily bent to a small radius under cold conditions. While subsequent annealing is generally unnecessary, it is advisable if the fabrication involves severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
