CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in a wide variety of environments.
- Its composition provides high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in aggressive oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Withstands chloride stress corrosion cracking and temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The presence of ferrite ensures robust performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short durations. Therefore, it is not recommended for use above 572°F (300°C).
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits good weldability.
- Generally, avoid welding without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Annealing temperature range is between 1868°F and 2012°F (1020°C to 1100°C).
- While Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened by heat treatment, it does work-harden effectively.
- Special precautions should be taken to account for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion, which may otherwise lead to warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010°F and 2100°F (1100°C to 1150°C). Shape considerations are crucial as non-compact forms may cool unevenly, increasing the risk of cracking in cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 demonstrates exceptional formability across various fabrications. However, its high strength can present challenges. Even with adequately powered equipment, it is crucial to account for increased spring-back due to the grade's elevated strength.
MACHINABILITY
Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging to machine than the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It demands higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. For optimal machining: A) Utilize powerful, rigid machines with robust tool and workpiece mounting, B) Minimize vibration by keeping tool extensions as short as possible, C) Use a nose radius on the tool, no larger than necessary, to maintain sharpness and strength, and D) Design machining processes to ensure cutting below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.

What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils varies based on cold rolling processes and post-rolling surface treatments. Common surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and others:
- NO.1: NO.1 surface is achieved through hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strips to remove black oxide scale. It has a silvery white matte finish and is typically used in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant industries without high surface gloss requirements, such as alcohol production, chemical processing, and large containers.
- 2B: The 2B surface, refined by light rolling, is smoother and brighter than the 2D surface, with a surface roughness Ra value between 0.1 to 0.5μm. This finish offers the highest versatility, making it suitable for industries such as chemicals, papermaking, petroleum, medical applications, and architectural curtain walls.
- TR hard surface: TR (hard) stainless steel, including grades like 304 and 301, is used for high-strength, high-hardness items such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. By leveraging the work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel, the strength and hardness of steel plates are enhanced through cold working techniques like rolling, without subsequent annealing, resulting in the distinctive TR hard surface.
- Re-rolled bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a sophisticated bright annealing process. Using a continuous annealing line allows for rapid cooling of the strip, which travels along the line at impressive speeds of 60-80m/min. - BA: The BA (Bright Annealed) surface is achieved by bright heat treatment after cold rolling. This process involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation, preserving the gloss of the cold-rolled surface. It is then polished with a high-precision smooth roller for heightened brightness. Surface roughness measures between 0.05-0.1μm, approaching a mirror finish.
