What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2507 stainless steel is an exceptional super duplex steel featuring a minimal carbon content (up to 0.03%) and enriched with chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). Engineered to meet the rigorous demands of applications necessitating superior strength and outstanding corrosion resistance, Duplex 2507 stainless steel is ideal for chemical process equipment, the petrochemical industry, and seawater equipment. Its remarkable resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking is attributed to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, which also ensures excellent resistance to pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is typically produced using methods akin to those employed for other high-alloy steels. The process begins in an electric arc furnace where scrap steel is melted and the desired alloys are introduced. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where critical processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases are carried out.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is generally added to the steel. Next, the steel is moved to the ladle furnace for inclusion adjustment.
- After these initial steps, the molten steel is directed to the casting operation, producing either single ingots or continuously cast blooms. These solid steel forms undergo further refinement through reheating and then forging or rolling to the required thickness. Solution annealing, a heat treatment process, is applied to achieve a uniform internal structure, followed by water quenching to finalize the treatment.
- Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be fabricated using both hot and cold forming techniques. For hot forming, the temperature should be maintained between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post hot-forming, a solution annealing process is necessary at a minimum temperature range of 1052-1125 °C, followed by rapid water quenching. Cold forming methods such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing also require subsequent heat treatment involving solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is classified as a super duplex stainless steel, characterized by a microstructure that combines both ferrite and austenite phases in roughly equal proportions. This unique structure imbues duplex stainless steel with high corrosion resistance and robust mechanical strength. However, different duplex steel grades offer varying degrees of corrosion resistance. While they generally provide good resistance to localized corrosion, including pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the specific resistance level is contingent upon the grade and alloy composition. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) range. Super duplex stainless steel falls within a PREN range of 38 to 45.
