CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Engineered to withstand corrosive attacks more effectively than any standard hardenable stainless steel.
  • Comparable to Alloy 304 in most environments.
  • Offers corrosion resistance in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
  • May suffer crevice or pitting attacks when exposed to stagnant sea water for extended periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • Compatible with most common fusion and resistance welding methods.
  • Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding.
  • Generally does not require pre-heating.
  • Inter-pass temperature should be limited to 248°F.
  • Enhanced toughness achieved in the weld post-complete heat treatment.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
  • Prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures may reduce toughness in the precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, heat uniformly to 2150 / 2200°F and maintain for half an hour per inch of thickness.
  • Optimal temperature range for hot forming is 650-900°F while the steel remains austenitic.
  • To ensure ideal conditions for hardening, re-heat treat the forgings at 1875-1925°F.
  • Cool forgings to below 90°F to ensure grain refinement.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is limited to mild operations when in the annealed (solution treated) condition due to its hardness.
  • For severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent cracking.
  • A bend radius exceeding 7T is often necessary.
  • To enhance stress corrosion resistance after cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended.

MACHINABILITY:

  • Machinable in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.
