Leading Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers in China
Grade 904L:
- The Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high alloy, low carbon steel. This grade boasts exceptional resistance to strong reducing acids, particularly sulfuric acid, due to its copper content. It also offers robust protection against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
- This grade exhibits outstanding formability and weldability and remains non-magnetic under all conditions. Thanks to its austenitic structure, it provides exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
- 904L stainless steel, enriched with significant amounts of nickel and molybdenum, once dominated many applications. However, the more cost-effective Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) now often substitutes it, reducing its frequency of use.
Corrosion Resistance:
- 904L stainless steel excels in resilience against diverse conditions, including sulfuric acid, warm seawater, and high chloride environments, bolstered by a PRE of 35. Its high nickel content ensures superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking, surpassing typical austenitic grades. The presence of copper enhances resistance to sulfuric and other reducing acids, especially within the extremely aggressive mid-concentration range.
- 904L's corrosion performance is intermediate between standard austenitic grade 316L and the advanced super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum.
- Compared to molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L, 904L offers enhanced resistance to strong corrosive environments.
- For optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance after cold work, 904L should be solution treated when exposed to demanding conditions.
Heat Resistance:
- 904L exhibits strong oxidation resistance but suffers from structural instability at higher temperatures, precipitating brittle phases like sigma. It is not recommended for use above 550°C. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code specifies design stress values for 904L up to 371°C.
Heat Treatment:
- Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat 904L to 1090-1175°C and cool it rapidly. This grade cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.
Welding:
- 904L can be welded successfully using all common techniques. However, due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is susceptible to heat cracking, especially in constrained weldments. No pre-heat is recommended, and post-weld heat treatment is typically unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for welding.
Fabrication:
- 904L, a high purity, low *** grade, does not machine as easily as specially designed machinability grades. Conventional methods can still be used effectively. Bending to a small radius is straightforward, usually done cold. Although subsequent annealing is generally not necessary, it should be considered if the fabrication will face severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
Typical Applications:
- 904L is ideal for processing plants handling sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids, pulp and paper processing, gas scrubbing plant components, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery components, and wires in electrostatic precipitators.
Specified Properties:
- ASTM A240M sets the standards for flat rolled products (plates, sheets, and coils). Other products like pipes, tubes, and bars have similar, though not always identical, properties defined in their individual specifications.
