How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is crafted using advanced techniques similar to those applied to other high-performance alloys. Initially, scrap steel is melted in an electric arc furnace, where the desired alloying elements are incorporated. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, a critical step where key processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and gas elimination take place.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically added to elevate the steel's properties. The molten steel then proceeds to a ladle furnace to fine-tune the inclusion levels.
- Post preliminary steps, the steel is directed to the casting phase, capable of producing either solitary ingots or continuously cast blooms. These solid steel forms undergo reheating followed by forging or rolling to achieve the required thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, the material undergoes solution annealing and is subsequently quenched in water.
- Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be shaped through hot or cold forming processes. During hot forming, the temperature range should be maintained between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post hot forming, the material requires solution annealing at a minimum temperature of 1052-1125 °C, followed by rapid water quenching. Cold forming techniques such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing necessitate a subsequent heat treatment involving solution annealing and quenching.
