904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic product that can withstand severe corrosion. It boasts exceptional corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with low carbon levels. This high-alloy stainless steel, enriched with copper, excels in resisting strong reducing acids such as sulfuric acid. Additionally, it is resistant to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic in nature, 904L stainless steel offers excellent formability, toughness, and welding capabilities. This grade contains high concentrations of costly elements like molybdenum and nickel, enhancing its durability.
904L grade stainless steel demonstrates remarkable resistance to hot seawater and chloride attack. Its high nickel content ensures superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking. The inclusion of copper further enhances resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both corrosive and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L grade steel positions it between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. Unlike grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, 904L offers heightened resistance. Optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance is achieved through solution treatment post-cold working.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes exhibit exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack, thanks to the high nickel content. This nickel composition significantly enhances resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, the inclusion of copper in these grades imparts excellent resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, making them highly versatile for use in both aggressive and mild environments.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L stainless steel stands between the super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum content and the standard 316L austenitic grades. Although 904L is less resistant than grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, it still offers substantial protection. To maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments, this steel grade requires solution treatment following cold working.
Grade 904L stainless steels exhibit commendable oxidation resistance. Nevertheless, the structural stability of this grade diminishes at elevated temperatures, especially beyond 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steel can undergo solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. Such thermal treatments are effective in hardening these grades, preserving their mechanical properties.
Grade 904L stainless steel can be welded using all conventional methods, without the need for pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments. However, it is susceptible to hot cracking in constrained weldments. Appropriate grade 904L electrodes and rods, in compliance with AS 1554.6, should be used for welding.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are characterized by high purity and low sulfur content, allowing them to be machined using standard methods. These grades can be easily bent to a small radius in cold conditions. While subsequent annealing is generally not necessary, it should be considered when the fabrication process subjects the material to severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
