GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a superior two-phase, ferritic-austenitic stainless steel enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Known as the most utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength twice that of standard austenitic grades. This alloy offers remarkable fatigue strength and outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion under challenging conditions.
APPLICATIONS
- Chemical processing, transport, and storage - Ideal for pressure vessels, tanks, piping, and heat exchangers
- Oil and gas exploration and processing equipment - Perfect for piping, tubing, and heat exchangers
- Marine and other high-chloride environments
- Effluent scrubbing systems
- Pulp and paper industry - Suitable for digesters, bleaching equipment, and stock-handling systems
- Cargo tanks for ships and trucks
- Food processing equipment
- Biofuels plants
STANDARDS
- ASTM/ASME: A240 UNS S32205/S31803
- EURONORM: 1.4462 X2CrNiMoN 22.5.3
- AFNOR: Z3 CrNi 22.05 AZ
- DIN: W.Nr 1.4462
CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 exhibits superior corrosion resistance over 316 and 316L in most environments.
- This composition also provides exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic conditions.
- Capable of withstanding chloride stress corrosion cracking and temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferritic phase ensures excellent performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 offers commendable oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- It is prone to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) for even brief durations. Thus, it is not recommended for use above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits good weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal should be avoided to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Annealing should be conducted within the temperature range of 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but Duplex 2205 does work-harden.
- Special measures are required to compensate for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact shapes, edges may be significantly cooler than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking in cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 demonstrates good formability in various fabrications. Due to its high strength, allowances for higher spring-back are necessary even if the forming equipment is powerful enough.
Machining Excellence
Duplex 2205 stainless steel presents slightly more processing challenges compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels due to its requirement for higher cutting forces, thus leading to increased tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Utilize powerful, rigid machines with exceptionally strong, stable mounting of tools and work pieces, B) Minimize vibration by keeping tool extension as short as possible, C) Use a nose radius on the tool, no larger than necessary, for carbides with a sharp edge while maintaining adequate strength, and D) Design machining sequences that always ensure a depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.
Distinctive Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel, enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. This unique combination significantly enhances performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steels. The microstructure, featuring a dispersed austenite/ferrite mix along with alloying elements, provides robust resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 offers acceptable oxidation resistance up to 980°C for specific applications, although it may become brittle when exposed to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C for extended periods. This versatile material is available in strips, coils, and sheets, suitable for a broad range of applications.
Common Surface Treatments for Stainless Steel Coils
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil varies based on the cold rolling processes and subsequent surface treatments. Common treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and other finishes:
- NO.1 Finish: This surface is achieved through hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of the stainless steel strip, removing black oxide scale formed during these processes. The No. 1 finish is matte and silvery white, ideal for heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant applications that do not require high surface gloss, such as in the alcohol industry, chemical industry, and for large containers.
- 2B Finish: Distinguished from the 2D surface by a light roller smoothing process, the 2B finish is brighter. The surface roughness Ra value typically ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm. This versatile finish is highly adaptable, making it suitable for a variety of industries including chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical, and construction, particularly building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301. It is used for high-strength, high-hardness applications such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel are leveraged to enhance the strength and hardness of steel plates through cold rolling methods. To replace the smooth flatness of the 2B base surface, the hard material is gently rolled by a few percent to tens of percent, without annealing after rolling, resulting in a TR hard surface.
- Re-rolled Bright 2H: Following the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes bright annealing. Using a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled while traveling at speeds of 60-80m/min. This process results in the bright 2H re-rolled surface finish.
- No. 4 Finish: The No. 4 surface offers an exquisite polishing effect, significantly brighter than the No. 3 finish. Achieve this by polishing the cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by sanding with a 150-180# grit belt. The surface roughness (Ra) measures between 0.2 and 1.5μm. This versatile finish is ideal for a range of applications including restaurants, cooking equipment, medical devices, architectural decorations, containers, and more.
- HL: The HL surface, commonly known as a hairline finish, complies with the Japanese JIS standard for achieving a continuous hairline abrasive surface via a 150-240# abrasive belt. Although the Chinese GB3280 standard is less clear, HL finishes are prevalently used in architectural decorations such as elevators, escalators, and exterior walls, providing a sleek, uniform appearance.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is an enhanced version of the No. 4, polished further with a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive material as per GB2477 standards. It offers a soft metallic luster with weak reflection and no imaging, making it perfect for applications like curtain walls, tassel decorations, and cooking supplies.
- BA: The BA surface receives a bright heat treatment post cold rolling. This treatment involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to maintain the gloss of the cold-rolled surface, followed by high-precision polishing to enhance brightness. With a surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, the BA finish is nearly mirror-like, suitable for food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and various decorative uses.
- No. 8: Known for its mirror-like reflection and absence of abrasive particles, the No. 8 surface-also referred to as 8K board in the stainless steel deep processing industry-uses BA material for mirror processing. A simple polish results in a beautiful, reflective surface, ideal for building entrances and interior decorations.
