GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that uniquely combines excellent corrosion resistance and formability with practical mechanical properties. Its resistance to various chemicals makes it suitable for multiple applications, with automobile trim and appliance components being the most prevalent.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of Grade 430, typically available in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434, the molybdenum-bearing counterpart of Grade 430, shares the same beneficial properties, with added corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M specifies the properties of Grade 430 for flat rolled products such as plate, sheet, and coil. Other products, including forgings and bars, have similar but not identical properties according to their specifications. The characteristics of Grade 430F for bar form are outlined in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 exhibits good resistance to various corrosive environments and some organic acids. It achieves the highest levels of corrosion resistance when highly polished or ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is comparable to Grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 has very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, shows significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to other high-sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Prolonged heating in the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, slow furnace cool to 600°C, and then quickly air cool. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Annealing - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat to 150-200°C if welding is required.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone can be effectively relieved by performing a post-weld anneal within the temperature range of 790-815°C.
- Grain refinement is not achievable.
MACHINING:
- Easier to machine than standard austenitic grades like 304.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn exhibit easier machinability compared to those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining version of 430, offers significantly improved machinability.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming operations somewhat easier than for grade 304.
- However, lower ductility limits the feasibility of very severe operations.
- Severe bends should be executed with the bend axis positioned at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible.
