CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 showcases outstanding resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking, ensuring long-lasting durability.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the upper temperature limit is set at 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure beyond this threshold can lead to embrittlement, thus maintaining structural integrity.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts over twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition, with yield strength exceeding 160 ksi when cold-worked. It maintains commendable toughness even at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be adeptly cold-formed. Given its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals may be necessary. Subsequent annealing post hot or cold forming is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.
Our forming capabilities are unrivaled, featuring state-of-the-art extrusion and cold working assets for tube and pipe manufacturing. We pride ourselves on possessing one of the world's largest pilger mills and a unique hydroforming process for precision fittings.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a highly resilient, duplex ferritic-austenitic alloy, containing an impressive 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. This grade stands out as the most utilized duplex stainless steel due to its yield strength, which is twice that of standard austenitic grades. It boasts remarkable fatigue strength and is highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the most severe conditions.
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not uniformly compact, the edges may be cooler than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking in the cooler areas.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube exemplifies exceptional formability across diverse manufacturing processes. Yet, its high strength can pose challenges. Despite having powerful equipment, it's crucial to consider the increased springback due to the grade's high strength.
Machining Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging than machining 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It demands higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Here are some essential machining guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with robust tool and workpiece mounts; B) Maintain short tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is only as long as necessary to retain a sharp edge and provide sufficient strength; D) Plan the machining sequence so the depth of cut stays below the work-hardened layer from prior operations.
