HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 has commendable oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is susceptible to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short durations. Therefore, it is not recommended for use beyond this temperature threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 possesses commendable weldability.
- Generally, it should not be welded without filler metal to avoid excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened through heat treatment but does exhibit work-hardening.
- Special consideration is needed to accommodate its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not uniformly compact, the edges may be cooler than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking in the cooler areas.
