GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade known for its exceptional corrosion resistance and formability, paired with practical mechanical properties. Its versatility allows it to be used in various chemical applications, with the most common uses found in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of this grade, available in bar form for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, the molybdenum-bearing counterpart of Grade 430, shares the same valuable characteristics, with added corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M defines the specific characteristics of Grade 430 for flat rolled products such as plate, sheet, and coil. Other products like forgings and bars possess similar yet distinct qualities per their specifications. The properties of Grade 430F for bars are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material provides good resistance to a broad range of corrosive environments and some organic acids. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when highly polished or ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is comparable to that of Grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 exhibits very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, shows significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, slow furnace cool to 600°C, followed by quick air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- For optimal results, pre-heat the material at a range of 150-200°C if welding is required.
- To alleviate embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone, a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C is recommended.
- Note that grain refinement will not occur under these conditions.
MACHINING:
- This material is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades like 304.
- However, there remains a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn are notably easier to machine compared to those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free machining version of 430, offers significantly easier machinability.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming somewhat easier than with grade 304.
- However, the lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible.
