GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade that combines excellent corrosion resistance and formability with usable mechanical properties. Due to its high resistance to corrosion, it is ideal for various chemical applications, with automobile trim and appliance components being the most prevalent.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining version of this grade, is available in bar form specifically for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, the molybdenum-bearing counterpart, shares similar characteristics but offers enhanced corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the characteristics of Grade 430 for flat rolled products such as plate, sheet, and coil. Other forms, such as forgings and bars, have analogous but not identical properties as specified. For bar forms, Grade 430F properties are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material demonstrates impressive resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including some organic acids. Optimum corrosion resistance is achieved when highly polished or ground, with pitting and crevice corrosion resistance comparable to grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, shows significantly lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 can withstand oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and up to 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating within the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C before quickly air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C can cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Annealing - Heat to 760-815°C and then either air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable through thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat to 150-200°C if welding is required.
- Alleviate embrittlement in both the weld metal and the heat-affected zone with a thorough post-weld anneal at a precise temperature range of 790-815°C.
- Note that no grain refinement will occur during this process.
MACHINING:
- Machining this material is notably easier compared to standard austenitic grades such as 304.
- However, there remains a tendency for galling and material pickup on the cutting tool.
- Opt for bars that have been lightly drawn as they are easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining variant of 430, offers significantly enhanced machinability.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate of this material makes bending and forming relatively easier than grade 304.
- However, lower ductility limits the feasibility of very severe forming operations.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is positioned at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
