What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a premium-grade super duplex alloy featuring a low carbon content (up to 0.03%), chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). Engineered to meet the rigorous demands of applications requiring exceptional strength and superior corrosion resistance, it is ideal for chemical process equipment, the petrochemical industry, and seawater applications. This stainless steel is exceptionally resistant to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. Its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content ensure exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- The production of Duplex 2507 stainless steel follows the standard manufacturing process for high-alloy steels. Initially, an electric arc furnace melts scrap steel and introduces the desired alloys. Once molten, the steel is transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where crucial processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases are carried out.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically added to enhance the properties of the steel. The steel is then transferred to a ladle furnace for inclusion adjustment, ensuring optimal quality.
- After these preliminary stages, the molten steel progresses to the casting operation, producing either solitary ingots or continuously cast blooms. These solid steel forms are reheated and subsequently forged or rolled to the desired thickness. To achieve a homogeneous internal structure, solution annealing heat treatment is employed, followed by rapid water quenching.
- Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be fabricated using hot or cold forming techniques. For hot forming, the temperature range should be maintained between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post hot forming, a solution annealing process is essential at a minimum temperature of 1052-1125 °C, followed by a fast water quench. Cold forming processes such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing also necessitate subsequent heat treatment, including solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is classified as a super duplex stainless steel, characterized by a microstructure containing roughly equal amounts of ferrite and austenite. This unique blend offers high corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical strength, integrating the best features from both phases. Different duplex steel grades offer varying levels of corrosion resistance. While they exhibit robust resistance to localized corrosion such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the exact resistance level depends on the grade and alloy composition. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) range, with super duplex stainless steel boasting a PREN range of 38 to 45.
