CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits superior resistance to corrosion compared to 304 in numerous atmospheric environments and corrosive media. This enhanced resistance is attributed to its elevated chromium and molybdenum content.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The ideal annealing temperature range is between 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Special consideration should be given to the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C). Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when forgings undergo a final anneal.
• Corrosion resistance is obtained if the forgings are given a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Types 316/316L, known for their toughness and ductility, are easily cold worked by methods such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., with ease.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to alleviate stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

• Due to its toughness, Type 316/316L proves somewhat more challenging to machine compared to Type 304.
• It machines with chip characteristics that are robust and resilient.
• Utilization of chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
• Employing large tools and ample cutting fluid is advisable.
• Heavy positive feeds at low speeds are ideal as 316/316L hardens rapidly during work.
