Type 321 stainless steel is a high-performance austenitic steel, boasting superior corrosion and oxidation resistance compared to Type 304 due to its increased titanium and carbon content. This grade excels in toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures, and is highly resistant to oxidation. The titanium content in 321 stainless steel offers several benefits: it prevents harmful carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of welds, provides partial protection against intergranular corrosion, and minimizes embrittlement in high-risk weld areas. Ideal for applications heated to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and exposed to corrosive environments, 321H stainless steel is a robust choice. Unlike 304 stainless steel, 321 contains more nickel and is stabilized with titanium, which interacts with carbon to prevent chromium carbide formation at grain boundaries, thus retaining corrosion resistance at critical temperatures. Additionally, 321 stainless steel hardens well with cold working, is easily weldable, and rarely requires post-weld annealing, ensuring outstanding performance in various corrosive conditions.

GENERAL PROPERTIES

• 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized, austenitic stainless steel known for its excellent overall corrosion resistance. It shows high resilience to intergranular corrosion after exposure to chromium carbide precipitation temperatures of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). With oxidation resistance up to 1500°F (816°C), it boasts superior creep and stress rupture properties over 304 and 304L steel pipes. Moreover, it delivers exceptional toughness even at low temperatures.
• Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S 32109) is a variant with higher carbon content (0.04 - 0.10) engineered for enhanced creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). Often, the carbon content facilitates dual certification.
• Alloy 321 can be strengthened exclusively through cold working, not heat treatment. It is highly weldable and can be processed using conventional shop fabrication methods.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

• Provides excellent general corrosion resistance comparable to 304.
• Engineered for use within the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
• Suitable for most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
• Compatible with pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
• Effective in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
• Resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.
• Used in chloride-free or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
• Not suitable for chloride solutions, even in low concentrations, or in sulfuric acid service.

PROCESSING

Alloy 321/H is easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.

HOT FORMING

• Recommended working temperatures for forging, upsetting, and other hot work are 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C).
• Not suitable for work below 1700°F (927°C).
• Material should be water quenched or fully annealed post-working to regain maximum corrosion resistance.

COLD FORMING

• Very ductile and easy to form.

WELDING

• Easily welded using most standard welding techniques.
• Post-weld heat treatment is not required.

MACHINING

• The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel yet similar to 304.
