What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2507 stainless steel, a high-performance super duplex steel, boasts a low carbon content (up to 0.03%), and is enriched with chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). It is engineered to meet the stringent requirements of applications demanding superior strength and exceptional corrosion resistance. Ideal for chemical process equipment, the petrochemical sector, and seawater systems, Duplex 2507 excels in resisting chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. Thanks to its high concentrations of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, it offers outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- Manufacturing Duplex 2507 stainless steel mirrors the processes used for other advanced high-alloy steels. Initially, an electric arc furnace melts scrap steel, integrating the required alloys. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where critical processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and removal of dissolved gases take place.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is commonly added to enhance the steel's properties. The mixture is then sent to a ladle furnace for further refinement of inclusions.
- Post these preliminary stages, the molten steel transitions to the casting phase, producing either large metal ingots or continuously cast blooms. These solidified forms undergo additional refinement through reheating and forging or rolling to achieve the desired thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, a solution annealing heat treatment followed by water quenching is employed.
- Fabrication of Duplex 2507 pipes can be achieved using hot or cold forming methods. Hot forming should occur at temperatures between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post-hot forming, solution annealing is crucial at temperatures of 1052-1125 °C, followed by rapid water quenching. Cold forming processes, such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing, also necessitate subsequent heat treatment involving solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is classified as a super duplex stainless steel. It features a microstructure comprising approximately equal parts ferrite and austenite, combining the advantageous properties of both. This unique structure provides superior corrosion resistance and robust mechanical strength. Despite the overall high resistance to localized corrosion like pitting, crevice, and stress corrosion cracking, various duplex steel grades offer different levels of resistance depending on their specific alloy compositions. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) range, with super duplex stainless steels boasting a PREN range of 38 to 45.
