CORROSION RESISTANCE

HEAT TREATMENT

  • The annealing process should be conducted within a temperature range of 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).

  • Special precautions may be required to account for the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to avoid warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING

  • Producers recommend a hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact shapes, ensure the edges remain at an appropriate temperature to avoid cracking.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING

  • Duplex 2205 showcases exceptional formability in a wide array of fabrications, making it a versatile choice for many applications. However, the high strength of Duplex 2205 may present challenges. Even with adequate equipment power, considerations must be made for the greater spring-back effect due to the grade's robust strength.

MACHINABILITY

Duplex 2205 is slightly more challenging to machine compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It requires higher cutting forces, which results in increased tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Utilize powerful, rigid machines with extremely strong and secure mounting of both tools and work pieces, B) Minimize vibrations by keeping the tool extension as short as possible, C) Use a nose radius on the tool that is only as large as necessary for carbides with a sharp edge while maintaining adequate strength, and D) Plan machining sequences to ensure each pass cuts below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.

  • Type 2205 is a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. This composition enhances its performance and corrosion resistance in comparison to 304 and 316 stainless steel. The alloy's austenite/ferrite microstructure, along with these alloying elements, provides resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 offers acceptable oxidation resistance up to 980°C for specific applications but can become brittle if exposed to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C for prolonged periods. Type 2205 stainless steel is available in strip, coil, and sheet forms, suitable for a broad spectrum of applications.

What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?

The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils can vary based on the cold rolling processing methods and subsequent surface treatments used. Available surface treatments for stainless steel coils include: NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and more.

  • NO.1: This surface is obtained after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strips. The No. 1 surface treatment removes the black oxide scale formed during these processes. It is a silvery white, matte finish typically used in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant industries where high surface gloss is not required, such as the alcohol industry, chemical industry, and for large containers.
  • 2B: In contrast to the 2D surface, the 2B surface is smoothed by a light roller, resulting in a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value, measured by equipment, ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, a typical range for most processing types. This versatile stainless steel strip surface is widely used across various industries including chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical, and in architectural applications such as building curtain walls.
  • TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301, which are used in applications requiring high strength and hardness, such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. By leveraging the work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel, the strength and hardness of steel plates are enhanced through cold working methods like rolling. To replace the smoothness of the 2B base surface, hard material is gently rolled by a few percent to tens of percent without annealing post-rolling. Thus, the TR hard surface is the result of the cold rolling process.

  • No. 6: The No. 6 surface involves further polishing of the No. 4 surface with a Tampico brush or a W63 grit abrasive material as per GB2477 standards. This results in a surface with an impressive metallic luster, softness, weak reflection, and no imaging, making it ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and cooking utensils.
  • BA: The BA surface is achieved through bright heat treatment following cold rolling. This process involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation, preserving the cold-rolled surface's gloss.
