A global leader in stainless steel pipe fabrication services Martensitic 410 stainless steel pipe, like most non-stainless steels, can be toughened by a "quench and temper" heat treatment. Containing at least 11.5% chromium, it boasts impressive corrosion resistance, especially when tempered and polished after hardening. As a general-purpose grade, 410 stainless steel pipe is usually hardened but remains machinable. It is ideal for applications requiring moderate heat and corrosion resistance coupled with high strength. The primary trait of martensitic stainless steels is their high hardness, although this comes at the expense of some other properties. Fabrication must account for poor weldability, often necessitating a final heat treatment. Compared to austenitic stainless steels, martensitic stainless steels have lower corrosion resistance and reduced ductility at sub-freezing temperatures. Additionally, they lose strength at elevated temperatures due to over-tempering, limiting their operational temperature range. Widely utilized, 410 stainless steel pipe can be heat-treated to achieve various mechanical properties. It offers high strength, hardness, good corrosion resistance, ductility, and magnetic properties. However, it is not recommended for environments where severe corrosion is expected.

Quick Response

  • Corrosion Resistance
    410 stainless steel demonstrates resistance to dry air, fresh water, mild bases and acids, foods, steam, and hot gases.
    For maximum heat and corrosion resistance, 410 stainless steel must be hardened. It performs best when smooth.
    Heat Resistance
    Exhibits good resistance to scaling up to about 650°C. However, it's not generally recommended for use between 400 and 580°C due to reduced mechanical properties.
    Heat Treatment
    Fully anneal at 815-900°C, followed by slow furnace cooling to 600°C, then air cooling.
    Process anneal at 650-760°C and air cool.
    Welding
    Easily welded by all standard methods. Preheating to 150-260°C and post-weld annealing are required to reduce the likelihood of cracking.
