Type 201 stainless steel is a versatile austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel. As a cost-effective alternative to typical Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304, Type 201 replaces nickel with manganese and nitrogen. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment but achieves high tensile strength through cold working. Initially non-magnetic in the annealed state, it becomes magnetic after cold working. This mid-range stainless steel is ideal for appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, catering equipment, automotive parts, fixtures, carriages, and window trim. However, it is not always suitable for outdoor structural applications due to susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially from seawater.
