Type 321 stainless steel is an austenitic steel that excels in corrosion and oxidation resistance. It boasts a higher titanium and carbon content than Type 304, providing exceptional toughness even at cryogenic temperatures. The titanium in 321 stainless steel prevents harmful carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the weld and offers partial protection against intergranular corrosion. It also reduces embrittlement in high-risk areas of the weld. Commonly used in applications exposed to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and corrosive environments, 321 stainless steel is identical to 304 stainless steel but includes more nickel, stabilized with titanium. This interaction with carbon prevents the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries, maintaining corrosion resistance by minimizing chromium consumption near grain borders during exposure to critical temperatures. This grade hardens well with cold working, is easily weldable, and rarely requires post-weld annealing to retain its outstanding performance in various corrosive conditions.

GENERAL PROPERTIES
- 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel renowned for its excellent corrosion resistance. It offers high resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to the chromium carbide precipitation temperature range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). The alloy withstands oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and provides superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L steel pipes. Additionally, it boasts good low-temperature toughness.
- Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S32109) is a higher carbon variant (0.04 - 0.10) of the alloy. It is engineered for enhanced creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). The carbon content frequently allows for dual certification.
- Alloy 321 can only be hardened by cold working, not heat treatment. It is easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Offers excellent general corrosion resistance, comparable to 304.
- Designed for use in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
- Suitable for use in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
- Effective in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
- Works well in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
- Resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.
- Suitable for chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
- Not recommended for use in chloride solutions, even in low concentrations, or in sulfuric acid service.
PROCESSING
Alloy 321/H can be effortlessly welded and processed using standard shop fabrication methods.
HOT FORMING
- Working temperatures of 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C) are ideal for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes.
- Not suitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
- Material must be water quenched or fully annealed after working to restore maximum corrosion resistance.
COLD FORMING
- Highly ductile and easy to form.
WELDING
- Easily welded by most standard processes.
- Post-weld heat treatment is not necessary.
MACHINING
- The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel but similar to 304.
