Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L is highly compatible with standard shop fabrication practices, offering ease of welding and processing.
Cold Forming
- 904L is remarkably ductile and forms with ease. However, due to the inclusion of molybdenum and nitrogen, more robust processing equipment may be required compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L involve temperatures between 1562 to 2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, hot working should be followed by solution anneal and quenching. However, if hot forming is halted at a temperature above 2012°F (1100°C) and the material is quenched immediately, it may be used without additional heat treatment. It is crucial that the entire workpiece be quenched from temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C). Partial heating or cooling below this threshold, or slow cooling, necessitates subsequent solution anneal and quenching. For optimal results, 904L should undergo solution annealing at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L renders it less machinable compared to 410 and 304 stainless steels, requiring adjustments in machining approaches.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most conventional welding techniques. Austenitic plate materials possess a uniform austenitic structure and a balanced distribution of alloying elements. During solidification post-welding, elements like molybdenum, chromium, and nickel may redistribute, potentially reducing corrosion resistance. However, 904L experiences minimal segregation and is usually welded with a filler metal of identical composition to the base metal, though it can also be welded without filler metal.
- For 904L welding, the recommended consumables are 20 25 CuL covered electrodes and 20 25 CuL wire.
