CORROSION RESISTANCE:

316L Stainless steel rod

• Our 316L Stainless Steel Rod, boasting enhanced chromium and molybdenum content, offers superior resistance compared to 304 in various atmospheric environments and corrosive media.
  and molybdenum content.
• However, it is prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and stress corrosion cracking above approximately 122°F (50°C).
• It is considered resistant to potable water with up to approximately 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, reducing to about 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Often referred to as the "marine grade stainless steel", it should be noted that it is not resistant to warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance, enduring intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L demonstrates superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Offers exceptional weldability across all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
• For Grade 316, heavy welded sections necessitate post-weld annealing to achieve maximum corrosion resistance, a step not required for grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range for this material is between 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• It cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Special measures must be taken to compensate for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Leading producers recommend a maximum forging temperature ranging between 2100°F and 2300°F
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C). Best corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final annealing process.
• Corrosion resistance is obtained if the forgings are given a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L Stainless steel rods, characterized by their extreme toughness and ductility, are highly amenable to cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., with ease.
• Severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Due to its toughness, machining Type 316/316L Stainless steel rod is more challenging than machining Type 304.
• 316/316L generates tough and strong chip characteristics during machining.
• Using chip breakers and curlers is advisable.
• Utilize the largest possible tool and copious amounts of cutting fluid.
• Opt for heavy positive feeds at low speeds because 316/316L work hardens swiftly.
