Type 321 stainless steel is an austenitic steel, mirroring many of the properties of Type 304 but enhanced with increased titanium and carbon content. This unique composition grants metal fabricators superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, coupled with exceptional toughness even in cryogenic conditions. The titanium in 321 stainless steel provides various distinct advantages: it prevents harmful carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the weld, offers protection against intergranular corrosion, and reduces embrittlement in high-risk areas of the weld. Predominantly used in environments where parts are heated to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and exposed to corrosive atmospheres, 321 stainless steel maintains its integrity. Unlike 304 stainless steel, 321 contains more nickel and is stabilized with titanium. This element interacts preferentially with the carbon in the steel, averting the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries, thereby preserving corrosion resistance by minimizing chromium consumption near the grain borders during exposure to critical temperatures. The grade hardens efficiently with cold working, is easily weldable, and typically does not require post-weld annealing to maintain its superior performance across diverse corrosive conditions.

  • The 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is an exceptional titanium stabilized austenitic stainless steel renowned for its outstanding overall corrosion resistance. This alloy exhibits superior resistance to intergranular corrosion post exposure to the chromium carbide precipitation temperature range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). Additionally, it withstands oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and showcases enhanced creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L steel pipes. The 321 steel also boasts commendable low temperature toughness.
  • The Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S 32109) variant features a higher carbon content (0.04 - 0.10) designed to provide increased creep resistance and strength at elevated temperatures above 1000°F (537°C). Typically, the carbon content permits dual certification.
  • Alloy 321 achieves toughening exclusively through cold working and not via heat treatment. It is exceedingly weldable and can be conveniently processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

  • This alloy demonstrates robust general corrosion resistance comparable to 304 stainless steel.
  • Specifically developed for application within the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
  • Effective in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
  • Suitable for use in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
  • Operable in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
  • Exhibits resistance to polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon services.
  • Effective in chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
  • Note: Not recommended for use in chloride solutions, even in minimal concentrations, or in sulfuric acid services.

PROCESSING

Alloy 321/H can be effortlessly welded and processed using conventional shop fabrication methods.

HOT FORMING

  • Optimal working temperatures range from 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C) for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes.
  • Not suitable for operations at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
  • To regain maximum corrosion resistance, perform water quenching or full annealing post-working.

COLD FORMING

  • Highly ductile and forms with ease.

WELDING

  • Easily welded using most standard methods.
  • Post-weld heat treatment is not required.

MACHINING
