Leading Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers in China
Grade 904L:
- Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high-alloy, low-carbon steel. This grade is significantly more resistant to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid, due to the inclusion of copper. Moreover, it offers robust defense against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
- This grade boasts outstanding formability and weldability and is non-magnetic under all circumstances. Its austenitic structure imparts exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
- 904L stainless steel uniquely incorporates significant amounts of nickel and molybdenum, two costly elements. However, advancements in duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) have provided a more economically viable alternative for many of 904L's traditional applications, leading to a decline in its usage.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Originally developed to resist sulfuric acid, 904L stainless steel boasts impressive resilience under a variety of harsh conditions. It excels in environments with warm seawater and high chloride content, as evidenced by its high PRE of 35. The high nickel content confers exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking, while the added copper enhances its durability against sulfuric and other reducing acids, particularly in mid concentration ranges.
- The corrosion resistance of 904L stands between the typical austenitic grade 316L and the highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades with 6% molybdenum. This balance makes 904L a versatile choice for various demanding applications.
- When compared to molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L, 904L exhibits superior resistance to harsh environments.
- For optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in challenging environments, 904L steel should undergo solution treatment following cold work.
Heat Resistance:
- 904L stainless steel offers strong oxidation resistance but is prone to structural instability at elevated temperatures, with the precipitation of brittle phases like sigma. Usage above 550°C is not recommended. According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the design stress values for 904L are set at 371°C.
Heat Treatment:
- Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat the material to 1090-1175°C and rapidly cool. This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
Welding:
- 904L can be welded successfully using all common techniques. Due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is susceptible to heat cracking, especially in constrained welds. Pre-heating should be avoided, and post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for welding.
Fabrication:
- 904L, being a high purity, low sulfur grade, may not machine as efficiently as grades engineered for machinability. Nonetheless, conventional methods can be used, and achieving a tight bend radius is straightforward, usually performed cold. While annealing is typically unnecessary, it should be considered if the fabricated component will be used in environments prone to severe stress corrosion cracking.
Typical Applications:
- 904L stainless steel is ideal for processing plants handling sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids, pulp and paper processing, gas scrubbing plants, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery components, and wires in electrostatic precipitators.
Specified Properties:
- As per ASTM A240M, the specified characteristics apply to flat rolled products like plates, sheets, and coils. Similar properties, though not identical, are outlined in individual specifications for pipes, tubes, and bars.
