The enhanced nickel and molybdenum content in this grade significantly boosts its overall corrosion resistance compared to 304, especially in pitting and crevice corrosion within chloride environments. CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Our 316 Stainless Steel exhibits exceptional resistance compared to 304 in diverse atmospheric environments and numerous corrosive media, courtesy of increased chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• It is, however, susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride settings, and to stress corrosion cracking above approximately 122°F (50°C).
• This grade is considered resistant to potable water with up to roughly 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, reducing to about 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Commonly recognized as the "marine grade stainless steel", it is, however, not resistant to warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Our 316 Stainless Steel provides excellent oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L further enhances resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• It offers outstanding weldability through all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
• For heavy welded sections in Grade 316, post-weld annealing is recommended to achieve optimal corrosion resistance, while this is not necessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range for this alloy is between 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• It cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Special measures should be taken to compensate for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion, avoiding warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers suggest a maximum forging temperature range between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) for the best
• corrosion resistance, ensuring the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Types 316/316L, known for their exceptional toughness and ductility, can be effortlessly cold worked, including roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, and more, without any difficulty.
• Parts that have undergone severe cold forming should be annealed to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is somewhat more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
• 316/316L machines with robust and durable chip characteristics.
• Chip breakers and curlers are recommended.
• Utilizing the largest possible tools and copious amounts of cutting fluid is advised.
• Heavy positive feeds at low speeds should be employed as 316/316L work hardens swiftly.
