Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic general-purpose stainless steel tube boasting 11% chromium. This makes it an excellent choice for applications demanding superior oxidation or corrosion resistance where carbon steel and some coated steels fall short. While 409 tubes showcase robust oxidation resistance and formability, their corrosion resistance is modest due to the lower chromium content. Compared to grades 304, 430, or 439, 409 offers less corrosion resistance but significantly outperforms mild steel. The 409 grade is versatile in forming techniques, including roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming. Post-annealing, 409 doesn't harden during warm and roll forming processes like press or stretch bending. Its weldability is fair, although it's not suited for shock-loaded structures due to grain growth in the heat-affected zone impacting mechanical quality. Primarily employed in tubing and stampings for automotive exhaust systems, 409 stainless steel tubes are prized in the automotive and agricultural sectors. They adeptly resist corrosion from exhaust gases and high-temperature conditions. Mechanical properties take precedence over aesthetics, making 409 unsuitable for decorative uses.
