Titanium Rod Specifications
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
Heat Treatment Guidelines
- For applications demanding high hardness, tensile, and fatigue strength, annealing can be conducted at 1,700-1,900°F (927-1,038°C).
The DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy is versatile in its heat treatment methods. - 1. Anneal: 1,275-1,400°F (691-760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000-1,200°F (538-649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675-1,750°F (913-954°C), 1 hour, water quench
- 4. Aging: 975-1,025°F (524-552°C), 4 to 8 hours, air cool
In solution treated and aged conditions, rapid quenching of small sections yields optimal properties. Larger sections and/or delayed quenching may result in suboptimal properties.
Titanium Rod Hardness
Typically, the hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, and in the solution and aged condition, it is around Rockwell C 35-39.
Forgeability and Formability
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum reduction of 35% is recommended for achieving optimal properties.
- Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar, known for its challenging formability at room temperature, exhibits greater flexibility when annealed. Severe forming operations like bending or stretching are achievable up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming can be expertly managed through creep forming within a temperature range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
Machining Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is efficiently executed using austenitic stainless steel techniques, which involve slow speeds, high feeds, and rigid tools. The process benefits significantly from ample use of non-chlorinated cutting fluids.
Weldability
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod offers excellent weldability in both annealed and solution plus partially aged conditions, with post-weld heat treatment facilitating aging. To prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, welding should occur in an inert gas environment. Fusion welding, spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can be performed with appropriate protective measures.
Special Considerations
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod must be carefully handled to avoid contamination from hydrogen during pickling and from oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes such as forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can reduce ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Corrosion Resistance
Titanium should be avoided in strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous *** environments.
General Corrosion
Table 1 demonstrates the general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in various media. CP titanium shows remarkable corrosion resistance in multiple environments including:
- Seawater and Brines
- Inorganic Salts
- Moist *** Gas
- Alkaline Solutions
- Oxidizing Acids
- Organics and Organic Acids
- Sulfur Compounds
Crevice Corrosion
CP titanium provides excellent resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions, outperforming stainless steels. It remains unaffected by crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80°C (176°F), even under highly chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking
Grade 2 titanium demonstrates superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium exhibits outstanding resistance to erosion in flowing environments.
Our Grade 2 Titanium Rods exhibit exceptional resistance to seawater erosion, even at velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), with negligible impact. The presence of abrasive particles like sand has minimal effect on the corrosion resistance of the material.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium shows no significant hydrogen absorption even when exposed to seawater at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption in titanium typically occurs only under the following conditions:
- The pH level is either below 3 or above 12.
- The temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C).
- A mechanism for hydrogen generation exists, such as a galvanic couple or an impressed current.
Bio-corrosion
Titanium alloys are uniquely immune to microbiologically influenced corrosion. Although biofouling can occur due to titanium's non-toxic nature toward marine organisms, this can be mitigated through chlorination or by increasing water velocity in heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many materials, Titanium maintains its fatigue performance even in seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates remain unchanged whether tested in air or seawater.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned near noble metals like stainless steel, typically acting as a cathode when coupled with other metals. While titanium itself is immune to galvanic corrosion, it can accelerate corrosion in the other metal. Pairing titanium with more noble metals like graphite enhances its passivity.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rods maintain their fatigue properties even in seawater, with endurance limits and *** growth rates identical in air or seawater.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rods are highly weldable if proper precautions are taken. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield is needed on both the OD and ID. Ensure the rod is free from grease and oil contamination before welding.
Typically, Grade 2 Titanium Rods are welded using either manual or automatic TIG welding methods, with or without filler wire. To minimize the heat-affected zone, use low heat input. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required.
