The 904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic product engineered to withstand severe corrosion, boasting superior corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a minimal carbon content. This high alloy stainless steel is enriched with copper, enhancing its resistance to strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid. It is also impervious to stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. 904L stainless steel is non-magnetic and exhibits exceptional formability, toughness, and weldability. The 904L grade is characterized by a high concentration of valuable elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel is remarkably resistant to hot seawater and chloride attack. The high nickel content in its composition provides excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, the inclusion of copper enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both corrosive and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L grade steel is intermediate between super austenitic steels containing 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. However, Grade 904L is more susceptible to stress corrosion than grades 304L and 310L, which do not contain molybdenum. For optimal resistance to stress corrosion cracking in sensitive environments, this grade requires solution treatment following cold working.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes offer exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride-induced corrosion. Their superior stress corrosion cracking resistance stems from their high nickel content. Additionally, the presence of copper enhances their defense against sulfuric acid and various reducing agents, making them effective in both aggressive and mild conditions.
Grade 904L's corrosion resistance sits between the high-end super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum and the standard 316L austenitic grades. While less resistant than molybdenum-free grades 304L and 310L, grade 904L requires solution treatment post-cold working to maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments.
Grade 904L stainless steels exhibit good oxidation resistance. However, their structural stability diminishes significantly at elevated temperatures, especially beyond 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels can undergo solution heat treatment between 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is ideal for hardening these grades.
Grade 904L stainless steels can be welded using all standard methods without the need for pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments. Although prone to hot cracking in constrained weldments, using grade 904L electrodes and rods according to AS 1554.6 ensures reliable welding.
High purity grade 904L stainless steel tubes, with their low sulfur content, can be machined using standard methods and bent to small radii under cold conditions. While subsequent annealing is typically unnecessary, it is recommended when fabricating under severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
