Ti 6Al-4V (Grade 5 Titanium) is the most widely used titanium alloy, accounting for over 50% of global titanium usage. Commonly used in the annealed state, it operates efficiently up to 400°C (750°F) and is welded with matching or ELI filler wire. Ti 6Al/4V offers significantly higher strength and better stiffness compared to commercially pure titanium tubes, though its thermal conductivity is about 60% lower. Its many advantages include heat treatability for enhanced strength and performance. Grade 5 titanium seamless tubes stand out for their formability, low density, and exceptional corrosion resistance.
This grade strikes an ideal balance of strength, corrosion resistance, weldability, and machinability, making it versatile for use in military aircraft, aviation, rocket parts, precision-guided components, armor parts, ship equipment, military vacuum equipment, and more. The 6-4, 6-4ELI variants are also used in surgical implants. Suitable for applications up to 400°C, it ensures improved ductility and toughness in cold working conditions. Delivered typically in the annealed state, it is easily heat-treatable for increased strength across diverse applications. Ti 6Al-4V titanium seamless tubes are the most commercialized titanium alloys, offering a rich blend of high strength, toughness, welding, and processing characteristics.

INTRODUCTION
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) stands as the premier choice among titanium alloys. This duplex alpha+beta alloy utilizes aluminum as an alpha stabilizer and vanadium as a beta stabilizer. Renowned for its high strength, it operates efficiently even at cryogenic temperatures approaching 800°F (427°C). ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy excels in various treatments, including annealing, solution treatment, and aging. Its applications are diverse: from jet engine compressor blades, discs, and rings to fuselage and space capsule components, pressure containers, *** cases, helicopter rotor hubs, and fasteners. The alloy's high strength-to-weight ratio makes it indispensable for critical forgings.
- The alloy is initially crafted using advanced methods such as vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Subsequent remelting occurs through one or two vacuum arc steps, ensuring optimal material quality.

Optimal properties are achieved in the solution treated and aged condition with rapid quenching of small cross-sections. Delayed quenching or larger sections may yield lower-than-optimal properties.
HARDNESS
Typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition to Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.
FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy tubes are optimally forged at 1,750°F (954°C), with an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For the best results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended.
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is known for its formidable strength and difficulty to form at room temperature, even when annealed. Consequently, intense forming operations such as bending or stretching can be executed on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its exceptional mechanical properties. For hot sizing or forming, creep forming is a viable method at temperatures ranging from 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).
MACHINABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy machined with techniques akin to austenitic stainless steels, employing slow speeds, heavy feeds, and highly stable
tooling, supplemented with substantial amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluid to ensure precision and efficiency.
WELDABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube showcases excellent weldability in both the annealed and solution-aged forms, with ageing carried out during the post-weld heat treatment.
- It is crucial to take precautions to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding can be conducted within an inert gas environment or with an inert gas tail shield protecting the molten metal and adjacent hot zones. Techniques like spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can be performed effectively without a protective environment.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is susceptible to hydrogen contamination due to improper pickling, as well as the absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treatment, brazing, and similar processes. Such contamination can diminish ductility, adversely affecting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.
