  • CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 offers superb resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.

    ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code specifies an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Extended exposure to temperatures above this leads to embrittlement.

    MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 provides more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. It can also be supplied in the cold-worked state with yield strength surpassing 160 ksi. It retains excellent toughness even at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).

    WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is amenable to cold forming. However, due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals may be necessary. Annealing is also recommended following hot or cold forming to achieve peak stress corrosion resistance.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel containing 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most commonly used duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength twice that of regular austenitic grades. This product is known for its excellent fatigue strength and outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in severe conditions.

Corrosion Resistance

  • With its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 showcases superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
  • This high alloy content also provides exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
  • Resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and effective at temperatures up to about 302°F (150°C).
  • The ferrite presence ensures excellent performance in caustic environments.

Heat Resistance

  • Similar to other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 exhibits good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
  • However, it is prone to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C) even when exposed for short periods. Therefore, Duplex 2205 is not recommended for use above this temperature.

Welding Characteristics

  • Duplex 2205 possesses good weldability.
  • Generally, it should not be welded without filler metal to avoid excessive ferrite.

Heat Treatment

  • The annealing temperature ranges between 1868 and 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
  • Cannot be hardened by heat treatment but does work-harden.
  • Special considerations are necessary to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

Processing - Hot Forming

Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, cooler edges may risk cracking.

Processing - Cold Forming

The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases exceptional formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can pose challenges. Even when using powerful equipment, the heightened springback due to the robust nature of this grade must be considered.

MACHINABILITY

Machining Duplex 2205 is slightly more demanding than working with 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It requires higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Follow these guidelines for optimal results: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with robust tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions short to reduce vibration; C) Maintain the tool nose radius only as long as necessary to ensure a sharp edge while providing ample strength; D) Structure the machining sequence so the depth of cut remains below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
