CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 boasts excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code limits the upper temperature to 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures results in embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 offers more than twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed state. It can also be provided in a cold-worked condition with yield strength surpassing 160 ksi, maintaining excellent toughness at temperatures down to -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be cold formed, though it has a high work-hardening rate, necessitating intermediate anneals. Post-forming annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

Machining Duplex 2205 is somewhat more demanding than working with 300 series austenitic stainless steels, requiring higher cutting forces and resulting in faster tool wear. Follow these expert guidelines for successful machining: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with robust tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Keep the tool nose radius as short as possible without compromising strength; D) Sequence machining operations to ensure the depth of cut remains below the work-hardened layer of the previous cut.
