904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized, low-carbon austenitic stainless steel enriched with copper. This addition boosts its resistance to potent reducing acids like sulfuric acid. Notably, 904L stainless steel is non-magnetic and exhibits exceptional formability, toughness, and weldability, with a high concentration of valuable elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel excels in resisting hot seawater and chloride attacks. Thanks to its high nickel content, it offers exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking. The added copper enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both harsh and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L stands between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and normal 316L austenitic steel. Grade 904L is more resilient than grades 304L and 310L due to its molybdenum content. For optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in sensitive conditions, solution treatment following cold working is recommended.

The corrosion resistance of grade 904L is considered intermediate, bridging the gap between super austenitic grades with a 6% molybdenum content and standard 316L austenitic grades. Although less resilient compared to grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, this grade requires solution treatment post-cold working to optimize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical conditions.

Heat Resistance

Grade 904L stainless steels exhibit commendable oxidation resistance. However, their structural stability diminishes at elevated temperatures, particularly beyond 400°C.

Heat Treatment

Grade 904L stainless steels can undergo solution heat treatment between 1090 and 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal procedure is effective for hardening these grades.

Welding

Welding grade 904L stainless steels is feasible using all standard methods. Pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments are unnecessary for this grade. However, hot cracking can occur in constrained weldments, necessitating the use of grade 904L electrodes and rods per AS 1554.6 for optimal results.

Fabrication

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are distinguished by their high purity and low *** content. They are easily machinable using conventional methods and can be cold bent to a small radius. While subsequent annealing is typically not required, it is advisable when fabrication occurs under severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
