Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel that offers superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. ASTM A240 outlines three subcategories of Type 409 stainless steel: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930, each with unique Ti or Nb stabilization requirements. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, any of these compositions may be provided as UNS S40900. This stainless steel is crafted with enhanced formability, often referred to as 'High Performance' or 'Ultra Form' within the industry.

Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel recognized for its robust performance in high-temperature environments. A general-purpose chromium stainless steel, Grade 409 is predominantly used in automotive exhaust systems. This material is particularly suitable for applications where mechanical qualities, corrosion resistance, and weldability are prioritized over appearance.
- ASTM specifications now classify Grade 409 under sub-grades S40910, S40920, and S40930, in line with ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel. These designations provide more precise standards compared to the generic Grade 409.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to varying extents with titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Any of these can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). Note that ASTM A268M lists only the standard Grade 409 for tubing applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 offers remarkable resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. While a light surface rust may develop in most environments, this layer acts as a barrier against further corrosion but is not ideal for cosmetic purposes. Its corrosion resistance is comparable to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades such as 410, though it is lower than the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C. However, these temperatures can vary depending on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat Grade 409 to 790-900°C and cool with air. This stainless steel grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easy to weld. A pre-heat of 150-260°C is recommended. While Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods can be used, welding with Grade 309 rods or electrodes is pre-qualified per AS 1554.6. These austenitic fillers ensure a more ductile weld.
- To enhance weld ductility, post-weld annealing at 760-815°C is advisable.
Welding small sections typically does not require post-weld annealing. Automotive exhaust tubing is often welded without filler metal (autogenously).
To minimize the effects of grain formation, all welding should be performed with as little heat as possible.

Automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.
Specified Properties
- ASTM A268M outlines the parameters for annealed Grade 409 tubing. ASTM A240M specifies the composition for additional grades used in coil and sheet applications. Other specifications may include similar properties, though they are not identical.
Forming:
- Grade 409 stainless steel can be easily cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability characteristics are very similar to carbon steel, making it versatile for various manufacturing processes.
