Grade 2 Titanium Tube (UNS R50400 / Werkstoff WS 3.7034)

This is the most commonly utilized titanium tube in industrial applications, offering a superb balance of moderate strength and reasonable ductility. It excels in providing outstanding corrosion resistance under both highly oxidizing and mildly reducing conditions, including chlorides. It delivers exceptional protection against corrosion in the chemical and offshore industries, and is integral in aircraft manufacturing where strength and ease of forming are paramount. Additionally, it is widely used in heat exchangers, hypochlorite systems, fire water systems, ballast water systems, industrial and aerospace components, CPI equipment, and piping systems.

Fabrication

Titanium Grade 2 is highly amenable to cold forming using standard methods. It is easily machined, though maintaining sharp tools and the liberal use of coolant are crucial. Similar to machining austenitic stainless steels, it demands deep, continuous cuts with slow feed rates and speeds.

Stock Availability

Daxun Alloys maintains a diverse inventory of CP 2 Grade Titanium Seamless and Welded Pipes in various sizes.

Weight Reduction

CP 2 grade titanium tubes boast low density and a high strength-to-weight ratio, making them ideal for applications requiring weight reduction without compromising strength. These tubes are cold formable, exhibit good ductility, and can be welded using standard TIG and MIG processes. Inert gas shielding is mandatory to prevent embrittlement in the weld zone.

Crystal Structure

At ambient temperature, ASTM B338 Grade 2 titanium tubes possess an alpha (hexagonal close-packed) crystal structure, akin to commercially pure titanium grades 1 and 3. At approximately 885°C (1625°F), this structure transforms into a beta (body-centered cubic) configuration. The transformation temperature can be adjusted based on the type and quantity of impurities or alloying additions. The inclusion of alloying elements divides the single transformation temperature into two distinct zones: the alpha transformation zone, below which the alloy remains all alpha, and the beta transformation zone, above which the alloy is all beta. Between these zones, both alpha and beta phases coexist. Typical alpha and beta transformation temperatures for Grade 2 titanium are 890°C (1635°F) and 913°C (1675°F), respectively.

Grade 2 Titanium Seamless Pipe Manufacturing Process

Daxun's ASTM B338 Grade 2 titanium seamless tubes are meticulously crafted from hollow blanks using hot extrusion or oblique rolling and piercing processes, followed by multiple cold rolling procedures. The tubes must maintain continuous perimeters throughout the manufacturing stages. The comprehensive manufacturing process includes: sponge titanium vacuum arc melting, ingot blanking to obtain hollow blanks, cleaning, cutting and feeding, hot extrusion or oblique rolling and piercing, degreasing, drying, cutting, online annealing and straightening, pickling, multiple cold rolling processes, degreasing, drying, vacuum annealing, straightening, cutting, pickling, final inspection, marking (DAXUN), and packaging.

Grade 2 Titanium Welded Pipe Manufacturing Process

Daxun's ASTM B338 Grade 2 titanium welded pipes are produced from annealed flat-rolled steel plates or strips using an automatic arc welding (TIG) process. The primary manufacturing steps include: uncoiling titanium plates, shearing, butt welding, cleaning, pipe forming, TIG welding, eddy current testing, pre-sizing, annealing, precision reducing and sizing, straightening, eddy current testing, caliper marking, cutting, ultrasonic testing, hydrostatic testing, final inspection, and packaging. Welded pipes must undergo at least one stress relief heat treatment post-formation and welding. Daxun does not employ any filler materials during the welding process.

Weight Reduction

CP 2 Grade Titanium Tubes are celebrated for their low density coupled with a high strength-to-weight ratio, making them the perfect choice for weight-sensitive applications without compromising structural integrity. These tubes excel in cold formability, showcase impressive ductility, and are amenable to welding using standard TIG and MIG methods, with necessary inert gas shielding to preserve weld quality.

Crystal Structure

The ASTM B338 Grade 2 titanium tube exhibits a hexagonal close-packed (alpha) crystal structure at room temperature, similar to commercially pure titanium grades 1 and 3. When heated to approximately 885°C (1625°F), it undergoes a transformation to a body-centered cubic (beta) structure. The transformation temperature varies with the presence of impurities or alloying elements, which also affect the alpha and beta transformation zones. For Grade 2 titanium, typical alpha and beta transformation temperatures are 890°C (1635°F) and 913°C (1675°F) respectively, highlighting its versatile thermal properties.
