GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade that masterfully combines outstanding corrosion resistance and formability with practical mechanical properties. Its remarkable resistance to various chemicals makes it suitable for numerous applications, with automobile trim and appliance components being the most prevalent.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of this grade, available in bar form for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, with added molybdenum, is the counterpart of Grade 430, offering the same valuable characteristics plus enhanced corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the properties of Grade 430 for flat-rolled products such as plate, sheet, and coil. Other forms like forgings and bars possess similar yet distinct characteristics under their respective specifications. For Grade 430F, the properties for bar form are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 demonstrates good resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including some organic acids. The highest corrosion resistance is achieved when the surface is highly polished or ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is on par with Grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 shows exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, has significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range may lead to brittleness at room temperature, which can be alleviated by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C and quickly air cool. Slow cooling between 540-400°C can cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- For optimal results, pre-heat the material to 150-200°C if welding is necessary, ensuring a smooth and strong finish.
- To mitigate embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zones, a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C is recommended.
- It's important to note that grain refinement will not occur under these conditions.
MACHINING:
- Grade 430 stainless steel is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades such as 304.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Machining is more efficient with bars that have been lightly drawn compared to those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining version of grade 430, offers significantly easier machinability.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate of grade 430 stainless steel facilitates easier bending and forming compared to grade 304.
- However, its lower ductility limits the feasibility of very severe operations.
- When making severe bends, it is best to position the bend axis perpendicular to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of grade 430 wire can be successfully performed.
